2006 Nonoperative Treatment of Osteoporotic Compression Fractures eMedicine PMR

Location: http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/325872-overview

Most of patients experiencing an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture remain asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic; however, a large number of these patients do experience significant pain resulting in decreased quality of life and disability. Conventional medical treatment for these patients includes pain medication, activity limitation, physical therapy, and possibly, bracing. Vertebroplasty...

2009 A randomized trial of vertebroplasty for osteoporotic spinal fractures

Location: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2930487

In this multi-center trial, we randomly assigned patients with 1-3 painful, osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures to vertebroplasty or to a simulated vertebroplasty without cement.
Conclusions Improvement in osteoporotic compression fracture pain and pain-related disability was similar in patients treated with vertebroplasty and patients treated with simulated vertebroplasty without cement.

2009 A randomized trial of vertebroplasty for painful osteoporotic vertebral fractures

Location: http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa0900429

We performed a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in which participants with one or two painful osteoporotic vertebral fractures that were of less than 12 months' duration and unhealed, as confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging, were randomly assigned to undergo vertebroplasty or a sham procedure.
Conclusions We found no beneficial effect of...

2009 Balloon kyphoplasty in malignant spinal fractures

Location: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1472-684X/8/12

Spinal fractures are a common source of morbidity in cancer patients. Balloon Kyphoplasty (BKP) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to stabilize fractures and correct vertebral deformities. We performed a meta-analysis to determine the efficacy and safety of BKP for spinal fractures in cancer patients.

2011 Cement leakage causes potential thermal injury in vertebroplasty

Location: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2474/12/116/abstract

Conclusions The results indicated that, for bone cement confined within the vertebra, curing temperatures do not directly cause thermal injury to the nearby soft tissue. If bone cement leaks into the spinal canal, the exothermic reaction at the posterior cortex might result in thermal injury to the neural tissue.
