The vertebrae have a thick band of abnormally increased bone density at their upper and lower margins. Within the body of each vertebra, there are curved areas of density change that roughly parallel the vertebral margins. The appearance can be recognised as a trace of the outline of the smaller vertebra at an earlier age of the patient. The appearance implies that the underlying process varies in its intensity over time.
