Description: Nonunion is a relatively common outcome of nonoperative treatment of unstable distal clavicle fractures. Although not all nonunions are symptomatic, a comparative study showed that patients treated nonoperatively had higher incidences of local complications, residual shoulder dysfunction, and nonunion than those treated by open reduction and internal fixation. Therefore, many authors recommend surgical treatment for unstable distal clavicle fractures.
