Schultz & Dang 2005
Orthopedic surgery plays a key role in the treatment of the polytraumatized patient. In a study at Brown University, gunshot wounds required more orthopedic trauma resources than other surgical areas. Each person on that team should be familiar with the basics of trauma resuscitations, outlined below.
Synonyms and related keywords: polytrauma, poly-trauma, poly-traumatized patient, multiple trauma, multitrauma patient, initial management of the trauma patient, orthopedic trauma, polytrauma, advanced trauma life support, ATLS, blunt trauma, MVA, motor vehicle accident, car accident, RTA, rad traffic accident, low-velocity trauma, high-velocity trauma, penetrating trauma, fracture, primary survey, secondary survey, traumatic shock, gunshot wound

Validation of the New Injury Severity Score for Outcome Prediction

OTA Paper 2004: A Study in 13,301 Patients from the German Trauma Registry
Purpose The NISS is a recent modification of the ISS, calculated from the sum of the squares of AIS for the three worst injuries, regardless of body region. The aim of this study was to investigate the predictive value of NISS in our usual population of patients with a predominantly blunt-injury mechanism.
Conclusion: The NISS was found to be superior or equivalent to the ISS and AISmax for prediction of all investigated outcomes in a population of typical European trauma patients.
