[Orthopod] Re: osteosarcoma in elderly

As you might expect there is a large literature on osteosarcoma. It is however, difficult to isolate papers that only deal with the elderly. The limits function in PubMed is curiously difficult to use. If you specify Aged (65+) it doesn't exclude all other age groups unless you do that specifically. So you get a very cumbersome search string viz - "Osteosarcoma"[Mesh] NOT Ewing's[All Fields] AND "humans"[MeSH Terms] AND "aged"[MeSH Terms] NOT (("infant"[MeSH Terms] OR "child"[MeSH Terms] OR "adolescent"[MeSH Terms]) OR "adult"[MeSH Terms:noexp] OR "middle aged"[MeSH Terms]) If you copy this search string and paste it into the pubmed search box you will get 310 returns. 44 of them say they are reviews but as usual they are mostly "report of a case and review of the literature" and not really reviews of the whole subject. The same applies to the full search I finally decided to look for an article I could read online and look up references from that. I searched for osteosarcoma elderly in PubMed Central (PMC) and found Outcome of patients with osteosarcoma over 40 years of age: Is angiogenesis a marker of survival? Eugene TH Ek, Joseline Ojaimi, Yasuyuki Kitagawa, and Peter FM Choong Int Semin Surg Oncol. 2006; 3: 7. Published online 2006 March 21. doi: 10.1186/1477-7800-3-7. PMCID: 1435760 | Abstract | Full Text | PDF–1.8M | From the reference list of that paper I found Carsi B, Rock MG. Primary osteosarcoma in adults older than 40 years. Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2002;397:53–61. doi: 10.1097/00003086-200204000-00008. [PubMed] Related Articles Grimer RJ, Cannon SR, Taminiau AM, et al. Osteosarcoma over the age of forty. Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2005 Sep;438:110-5. PubMed Related Articles Then I went back to pubmed to look for related articles on the above papers. I have added links to related articles to the 5 references above. Serendipitously I found an article in Acta Orthopaedica which is open access. This might have been a better starting point. However, most of the paper and references focused on chemotherapy. Bacci G, Ferrari S, Mercuri M, Longhi A, Fabbri N, Galletti S, Forni C, Balladelli A, Serra M, Picci P. Free Full Text Neoadjuvant chemotherapy for osteosarcoma of the extremities in patients aged 41-60 years: outcome in 34 cases treated with adriamycin, cisplatinum and ifosfamide between 1984 and 1999. Acta Orthop. 2007 Jun;78(3):377-84. There is a large literature on Osteosarcoma and Pagets if that is relevant to your case.
