Description: Ulnar variance refers to the relative lengths of the radius and ulna, specifically with regard to adjoining articular surfaces of the distal ulna and radius. The styloid (or lateral) side of the radius normally projects more distal than does the ulna; however the distal radial articular surface is normally tilted toward the ulnar side of the wrist and a line projecting transversely from the level of this joint surface toward the ulna should smoothly connect with the plane of the distal ulnar artiucular surface. Ulna plus variance is said to be present when the ulnar joint surface is distal to this line and ulna minus variance is present when line is more distal than the ulna joint surface.
