Description: To detect and appreciate injuries of the cervical spine, you must be aware of the normal radiographic appearances and anatomical features of this region. This section will review the typical x-ray examinations seen by an emergency physician. Usually FIVE different projections will be obtained with the initial film a cross table lateral view. This is a lateral (side on) view of the spine which can be taken without significant movement of the patient. This film should be reviewed by a physician before any other films of the cervical spine are obtained. A severe injury documented at this stage will mean fewer films before stabilization is made secure and those films requiring movement will be omitted. Remember that plain films will need to be supplemented by more detailed and precise tomographic examinations in many cases.
