Description: Benign fibrous histiocytomas (FH) present as a small masses either in the dermis or subcutaneous tissue. They may also be found occasionally in deep structures. FH are most commonly found the young adult population (ages 20-40). In the past, nomenclature has been confusing and variable, with prior names including dermatofibroma, histiocytoma cutis, nodular subepidermal fibroma and sclerosing hemangioma. As opposed to some of the other benign fibrous lesions, FH is felt to be neoplastic and not reactive in nature. Simple marginal excision is recommended as recurrences are uncommon and the lesion never converts to a malignant process. Contents - I. Introduction II. Historical Perspective III. Anatomic and Physciologic Considerations IV. Natural History and Classifications V. Diagnosis and Recognition VI. Treatment VII. Summary X. References Scott D.
